Updike is unaware that "the conditioning of the brain" is really a metaphor for our habits of thought. And habits, once they are made aware of, can be changed, or, in cases where they are so patently limiting and superficial like the ones Updike describes, will appear so abhorrent when noticed, that they will almost change over night. That's my experience, anyway.
